Telling stories . . . and learning at the same time

The students’ assignment seemed simple: tell a story about People You Should Know in the Kent community.

There were a couple of twists, however. The “students” were faculty members in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. And, they had to tell those stories using multimedia tools with which they were unfamiliar: video, audio, photography, slideshows. The People You Should Know stories became the end-products of a week-long multimedia training program for 11 faculty. Working in teams, they planned their stories, shot and edited video, captured and edited audio, created slideshows and uploaded their stories to the Web.

Their stories covered a wide range of subjects:

a KSU Child Development Center teacher who introduces her students to worms and the idea of environmental sustainability
a program where long-time Fashion Museum volunteers devote their time and skills to preserving costume history
a local wine shop and its deck overlooking the Little Cuyahoga River providing a tranquil gathering place and a sense of community
the Continental Grill, a home-style restaurant in Kent, that focuses on Mediterranean food and family

They’re all good stories about local people you should know, and they were produced by people who learned a lot about multimedia storytelling in one very busy week.
