Taste of Lebanon

Michael Awad’s Continental Grill is a home-style restaurant with Mediterranean specialties

What used to be a hot dog stand called Main Street Coney’s in Kent is now a Lebanese restaurant serving baba ghanoush, chicken shawarma and falafel.

In the 18 months since he bought the restaurant across from Kent State University, businessman Michael Awad and his wife, Nicole, have attracted a following of students, faculty, staff and townspeople. In the city where ethnic food usually runs to Mexican and Chinese, the Continental Grill has been selected best ethnic restaurant by KentNewsNet.com.

Awad’s mother-in-law Antoinette Jabbour provided the recipes and trained the cooking staff. Now manager Norm Shaffer, former co-owner of Coney’s, does much of the food preparation. The Mediterranean menu still has a section for hot dogs and fries, also made by Shaffer, who co-owned Coney’s.

Going Continental

Behind the Scenes with Food

Michael Awad, owner of the Continental Grill, prepares traditional Middle Eastern dishes for diners in Kent, Ohio. Here he prepares his personal favorite, the falafel sandwich. Among the Continental Grill’s top sellers is the Chicken Mishwi salad. It includes grilled marinated chicken over mixed greens with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and feta cheese.
